Stuntman killed in movie set chopper crash

CORFU, Greece -- A helicopter involved in what was called a routine fly-by on the island location of a new adventure movie crashed Wednesday, killing a stuntman and injuring three others and the pilot, a spokeswoman said.

The crash occurred during filming of an aerial sequence for the movie, 'Hired to Kill,' which stars Oliver Reed, George Kennedy and Jose Ferrer, said Amanda Martin, Los Angeles spokeswoman for Omega Entertainment, distributor of the film.

The man killed, Clint Carpenter, was riding with two other stuntmen on the skids on the helicopter as it did a 'fly-by' from right to left in front of the cameras, which were filming from a nearby rooftop.

At the end of the manuever, the helicopter was to have made a turn to finish the shot. For reasons still under investigation by local authorities, the chopper failed to make the turn and crashed into some trees.

Carpenter, whose age and hometown were not immediately known, was dead on arrival at a Corfu hospital.

Also injured in the crash was stuntman Michael Kane, who was hospitalized with two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a fractured leg. The pilot, Marc Wolff, known for his aerial stunt piloting in many James Bond films, was also hurt. The extent of his injuries were not known.

Stunt coordinator Mark Cuttin and an unidentified stuntman were also injured. All remain hospitalized in Corfu while arrangements were made to take them to Athens for further tests.

The Allstar Pictures Ltd. production has been shut down for two days because of the 'emotional impact' of the crash on the cast and crew, Martin said.
