Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Manchester United is expected to offer a new contract to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Sources told ESPN FC that the Swedish striker is expected to sign his new deal with the English squad "as early as this week."
The 35-year-old is recovering from the knee injury he suffered in April during a Europa League match against Anderlecht. Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in his first season with the team and had 17 goals in 27 Premier League starts. His contract with the club expired in June. He has been training and rehabbing the injury at the club's Aon Training Complex.
"He's injured and he needs time to recover," Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho told the team website earlier this month. "He's not ready to play tomorrow, he's not something urgent, he's not something you are desperate to have it done, or not done."
"I just think he was very clear by showing what he did last year was not enough for him. He thinks he can do more, he wants more at football's highest level, so we are having conversations and we are discussing the possibility of him staying with us for the second part of the season."

Ibrahimovic turns 36 in October. He posted a video on social media Sunday to show off the health of his knee. In the four-second clip, Ibrahimovic performs several roundhouse kicks to a punching bag.
"Which knee?" he wrote.
Ibrahimovic agreed to terms with United in June of 2016, leaving French side Paris Saint-Germain. He has since been linked to huge offers from the Los Angeles Galaxy.
