MANCHESTER, Maine -- Samantha Smith, the 11-year-old girl whose correspondence with Soviet President Yuri Andropov brought her international attention, had nothing to say about a Hong Kong girl's letter to the Kremlin.
Samantha's father, Arthur, said it would be inappropriate to comment about a letter written by a 9-year-old Hong Kong girl to Andropov questioning the death of a friend in the downing of a Korean Air Lines jet.
The South China Morning Post reported that the Hong Kong girl, Choi Man-Yee, wrote to Andropov asking why her best friend and the friend's parents were killed.
'Until all the facts are known, at least, I don't think Samantha should say anything,' Smith said. 'She might make a comment that would be fine now, but a week from now when the facts are better known, might look silly.'
He said Samantha has no current plans to write any new letters to Andropov.
