J. Cole dedicates 'Crooked Smile' video to Detroit girl shot by police officer

Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a 7-year-old girl from Detroit, was shot and killed by a police officer in 2010 when his gun went off during a drug raid.

Hoping to call attention to the ramifications of the war on drugs, rapper J. Cole dedicated his video to Stanley-Jones and based its story on her tragic death.

"For Aiyana Stanley-Jones," the video concludes. "And please reconsider your war on drugs."

Director Sheldon Candis told Vibe that J. Cole and his Roc Nation family wanted the video to make a "social statement."

I was on the phone with J. Cole and he was like, 'Listen, I really want to play Aiyana's older brother, so let's create a narrative story between me as this individual who does deal drugs... but is still a human being and he's so excited about spending the day with his little sister, but all the while the parallel is that there's a DEA agent who, on this day, is going to raid his home and then what happens when something tragic occurs.

Roland Lawrence, who chairs the Aiyana Stanley-Jones Committee, thanked J. Cole in a statement.

"There can be no forgetting what happened to an innocent 7-year old as she slept in her grandmother's arms," he said. "This effort and recognition by J. Cole hopefully will call us all on the table as it pertains to injustice in America, and, in fact, injustice everywhere."
