Former Connecticut city alderman gets 10 days for 2021 Capitol breach

April 24 (UPI) -- A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced former Derby, Ct., Alderman Gino DiGiovanni Jr. to 10 days in jail and ordered him to pay $500 restitution for entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

DiGiovanni also will spend a year on supervised release and must complete 50 hours of community service, ctpost and NBC Connecticut reported.

DiGiovanni pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds in the case before the federal district court in Washington D.C.

His defense attorneys sought no jail time, and prosecutors requested a sentence of 30 days. Federal sentencing guidelines recommended a sentence ranging from zero days to six months imprisonment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Boyles argued DiGiovanni showed no remorse for entering the Capitol despite obvious signs that he shouldn't.

USDC District of Columbia Chief Judge James Boasberg delivered the final judgment in the matter.
