May 21 (UPI) -- More heavy rain is expected in the U.S. Southeast from the Carolinas to Florida this week after a weekend of rain.

Tropical moisture is on the way, and a flood watch for southern Florida counties was in effect Monday. A high-pressure system is expected to remain in the Atlantic Ocean, bringing additional rain to the region after 10 inches of rain fell in the past eight days. As much as 4 more inches of rain can be expected in Florida and southern Alabama this week, ABC News reported.

The predicted storms could affect plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Conditions in the Caribbean indicate that a tropical storm could form in the next several days.

The rain thus far has reduced Florida's drought conditions from 34 percent of the state to 21 percent in one week, the U.S. Drought Mitigation Center reported. Over 40 wildfires were reported burning in Florida on May 13, but only five were active on Sunday.

The state has also been impacted by severe weather stretching from Texas and Ohio to the East Coast. Seventy reports of damage from storms were reported Sunday in the area, and a confirmed tornado was observed in Leander, Texas, near Austin. The center of the storm is expected to move into the Ohio Valley on Monday.
