Alaska: Miller admits lies in computer use

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Alaska Republican U.S. Senate nominee Joe Miller admitted in 2008 he lied after it was found he used government resources for politics, documents show.

Miller was caught using Fairbanks North Star Borough computers for political purposes while working part-time as a lawyer for the borough. His admission that he lied after getting caught was contained in e-mails released by the borough Tuesday in response to lawsuits by news organizations, the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News reported.

"I lied about accessing all of the computers. I then admitted about accessing the computers, but lied about what I was doing. Finally, I admitted what I did," Miller wrote in a March 17, 2008, e-mail to borough attorney Rene Broker.

In the e-mail, Miller admitted he went on the computers of three co-worker to take part in a political poll, clearing the caches after each use. He acknowledges that "my access to others' computers was wrong, participating in the poll was wrong, lying was wrong, and there is absolutely no excuse for any of it."

Miller had resisted release of his employee records. An Alaska judge Saturday ordered the borough to release the documents and Miller decided not to appeal the ruling, the Daily News reported.

Records released Tuesday include a letter to Miller from the borough attorney notifying Miller that he had been "dishonest both about your conduct and the reasons for the conduct" before he admitted what he had done. Miller was suspended for three days and given six months probation for the infraction.
