May 19 (UPI) -- National Notebook Day, celebrated annually on the third Thursday in May, was founded by a notebook company in 2016 to celebrate the practice of writing on paper.

The holiday was first inaugurated in 2016 by custom notebook company May Designs, which said in a press release that it wanted to celebrate bound paper notebooks as "a refreshing holdout from another generation."

"The notebook and planner community is so vibrant and alive," May Designs CEO Mica May said in 2016. "If anything, our customers have become even more dedicated to paper over the past few years. There's this amazing connection between writing something down that you can't get typing it into your phone or laptop."

Other holidays and observances for May 19, 2022, include Boys Club Day, Brown Bag It Thursday, Celebrate Your Elected Officials Day, Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Hepatitis Testing Day, Malcolm X Day, May Ray Day, National Aperitif Day, National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, National Devil's Food Cake Day, Plant Something Day and World IBD Day.
