Germany and India deepen ties

HANOVER, Germany, April 24 (UPI) -- Germany and India are seeking to continue their cooperation in fighting terrorism and deepening economic ties, according to the country's two leaders.

"Both sides agree to continue close cooperation in the fight against terrorism, both through regular bilateral consultations and cooperation in the multilateral context," German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a joint statement on Monday.

The statement comes as India acts as the partner country of this year's Hanover Trade Fair, with more than 5,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries the world's biggest industrial fair. Merkel and Singh together opened the fair Sunday evening.

Merkel said Germany and India would launch "a new phase" through the partnership at the fair, calling India a country with "huge potential" and "tremendous growth possibilities."

Some 350 Indian companies, more than ever before, are exhibiting in Hanover. Economic and trade relations between Germany and India have flourished in recent years, and they are expected to deepen as India grows.

Several business deals have been inked in the context of the bilateral meeting: Airbus sold five A340 airplanes worth $1 billion to Indian Kingfisher Airlines, and German railway giant Deutsche Bahn and India Railways signed an agreement to more closely cooperate in the future when it comes to research and technology.
