India seeks more gas from Qatar

DOHA, Qatar, April 24 (UPI) -- India plans to buy more liquefied natural gas from Qatar and will expand the capacity of its Dahej LNG terminal to 10 million tons a year from 5 million tons.

The plan was discussed during a meeting between Murli Deora, India's minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and his Qatari counterpart, Abdullah Bin-Hamad al-Attiyah.

Qatar's RasGas supplies 5 million tons of LNG annually to India and made an additional commitment for 2.5 million tons, but India wanted 2.5 million tons more.

"Since the situation at RasGas is very tight due to its existing supply commitments, it is difficult to make a commitment to India for the extra 2.5 million tons," al-Attiyah said.

The comments were reported by the semi-official Press Trust of India.

India is seeking to diversify its sources of energy to feed its growing economy.
