EnBW plans first German tidal plant

KARLSRUHE, Germany, March 31 (UPI) -- German energy company EnBW wants to build Germany's first tidal power plant.

The Karlsruhe-based company wants to push its renewable energy sector with the plant on Germany's North Sea coast. Also in planning is a compressed air energy storage plant, also near the coast, which may store energy generated by the many wind turbines in northern Germany.

EnBW head Utz Claassen said both projects are "forward-looking as they combine innovative methods with our desire to further push renewable energy sources."

Technology company Siemens and the state of Lower Saxony are also investing in the projects.

"Lower Saxony is an energy state," its Economy Minister Walter Hirche said. "With these two projects, we want to lay the foundation for a new generation of power plant technology."

EnBW has some 5 million customers in Germany. It has roughly 17,800 employees and focuses on electricity and gas, as well as on energy-related services.
