NYPD: Doctor kills physician, himself; 6 wounded in hospital shooting

By Doug G. Ware

June 30 (UPI) -- A woman was killed and several people were injured Friday in a workplace shooting at a New York City hospital -- which also resulted in the shooter's death, police said.

Police said the shooter opened fire on the 16th and 17th floors of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital around 3 p.m. Six victims were injured -- five seriously, police said.

The woman who was killed was a physician at the hospital, officials noted. None of the shooting victims were immediately identified.

"The situation unfolded in the middle of a place that people associate with care and comfort," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference.

New York City Police Department spokesman J. Peter Donald said the suspect killed himself at the scene -- by setting himself on fire and shooting himself in the head.

Authorities identified the gunman as Dr. Henry Bello, a former employee at the hospital, and said the shooting was a workplace dispute.

The rifle used was an M-16 type weapon, which is the military version of the AR-15 assault rifle.

Bello, 35, who formerly practiced as a family physician at the hospital, wore a long lab-type coat during the attack, police said.

According to authorities, Bello had been forced to resign from his position at the hospital over a harassment scandal, The New York Times reported.

"It's been happening almost anywhere, but nobody was waiting for this," patient Miguel Mercado told the Times. "Who would have thought it would happen in a hospital?"
