Protesters throw rocks and bottles at Trump rally in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, May 24 (UPI) -- Albuquerque, N.M., police said "several" officers were being treated for injuries after violent protests broke out outside a Donald Trump rally Tuesday even.

Hundreds of protesters threw rocks and bottles and smashed a glass door outside the event at the Albuquerque convention center.

Inside the event, protesters also interrupted Trump a few times, holding signs that read "Trump is fascist" and "We've heard enough." Police escorted the protesters out while Trump mocked them as they left.

His supporters followed, chanting "Build that wall!"

Some protesters outside crossed metal barricades trying to enter the convention center, though Trump had already left the event.

Despited the projectiles being thrown at their horses, police tweeted no tear gas was used. They said "several" officers were treated for injuries from rocks and one arrest was made.

It was the presumptive GOP nominee's first visit to New Mexico, the most Latino state in the country. Trump has been criticized for his stances on illegal immigration, particularly from Mexico. Early on in his campaign, he proposed building a wall along the entire U.S.-Mexico border and forcing Mexico to pay for it.

His comments calling many undocumented immigrants from Mexico rapists and criminals sparked backlash from Latino communities within the United States. Spanish-language Univision, for example, cut ties with Trump and refused to air the Miss USA pageant, which is partially owned by the real estate mogul.

Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton campaigned for his wife, Hillary Clinton at the northern end of the state Tuesday.
