Young girls identified as suicide bombers in Nigeria attack; 15 dead

KANO, Nigeria, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Fifteen people died when two girls detonated suicide bombs in a Kano, Nigeria, produce market, police said.

Kano police spokesman Musa Magaji Majia said the two bombers -- ages 11 and 18 -- were dropped off at the market by a minibus Wednesday.

"One went inside the market, the other stayed outside then they exploded, killing themselves and others nearby. The victims were taken to hospital and it was later confirmed that 15 people died, not including the suicide bombers," he said.

At least 100 people were reported injured.

The incident is typical of attacks by Islamist militant group Boko Haram throughout northern Nigeria, which have killed about 1,000 people since May. No group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack.

The attack follows another bomb explosion Tuesday at a market in the city of Yola in which at least 32 people died and 80 were injured.

Last week Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who promised to eliminate Boko Haram when he successfully ran for the presidency earlier this year, visited Yola and told local soldiers Boko Haram was near defeat. The military has lately taken back previously captured territory from the group, which has since relied on isolated suicide bombings of markets, mosques and bus stations in their terrorism campaign.
