Video: Lionel Messi head-butts French defender

By Alex Butler

BARCELONA, Spain, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- As arguably the greatest soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi demands the camera lens on and off of the soccer field.

And that's just where they were when the five-foot, seven-inch Argentinian forward blasted his head at a French defender during Barcelona's 3-0 victory over Roma Wednesday at Camp Nou.

After an on field run-in, where Roma's Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa made contact, Messi had a meltdown. The phenomenal forward ran up to the much taller Yanga-Mbiwa, head-butted him and also put his left hand around his neck and pushed him away. Yanga-Mbiwa's teammates and referee Javier Estrada Fernandez then broke up the squabble. Messi, 28, and Yanga-Mbiwa miraculously escaped with meager yellow card disciplines.

Messi scored a goal seven minutes after the altercation and assisted the first score.
