MACCLESFIELD, England, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- British investigators said they were unable to identify a "flying man" reported by the pilot and first officer of a plane.

The United Kingdom Airprox Board, which investigates near-misses in British airspace, said the pilot and first officer of the Airbus 320, which was headed for Manchester Airport, spotted what appeared to be a "flying man" over Macclesfield, England.

"The crew only saw it fleetingly, there was no time to take avoiding action and they reported that they based their assumptions on it being a person under a canopy," the report said.

However, the report said neither the pilot or the first officer "can remember seeing a canopy."

The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association said the weather conditions at the time of the June 13 incident would have precluded the possibility of a lone skydiver in the area, and it would have been unlikely for the crew to miss seeing a parachute, as it "would have been the most obvious object by a -significant margin."

The Airprox report said the crew "could not be certain that it was not a person-shaped balloon," but weather conditions made that possibility unlikely.
