LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A student was rushed to the hospital after a shooting at a Louisville area high school Tuesday.
Fern Creek High School was put on lockdown Tuesday afternoon and a student was rushed to a hospital after gun shots were fired on campus.
Nearby, Fern Creek Elementary and St. Gabriel School were also placed on lockdown.
Neither the identity of the shooter nor the victim were being released as of 2:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.
According to the Louisville Metro Police, students reported seeing a firearm at the school, and police are on the scene looking for weapons. An LMPD press conference is expected to begin shortly.
Louisville-Jefferson County Emergency Management spokeswoman Jody Duncan confirmed that one student was shot, and that the shooter appeared to be someone "15 or 16 years old."
Jefferson County Public Schools confirmed that the student was taken to University Hospital and the student's parents have been notified.
LMPD public information officer Phil Russell said the student's injuries were non-life-threatening. Russell added that police believe there was only one shooter and that the shooter left the scene immediately.
Once police finish clearing the school, JCPS will send Fern Creek students to Fern Creek Park to be bussed home on alternative routes, or parents may pick up their children.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
